How to Apply Wall Stickers Without Damaging Your Walls

One of the most common questions we get at WallStick is: "Will wall stickers damage my walls?" The short answer is no — as long as you apply and remove them correctly. Here's our complete guide to getting a perfect result every time, without leaving any marks or residue behind.

What You'll Need

  • Your WallStick wall sticker
  • A clean, dry cloth
  • A credit card or squeegee
  • A ruler or level (optional, for precise placement)
  • A hairdryer (optional, for removal)

Step 1: Prepare Your Wall

This is the most important step that most people skip. A clean, smooth surface is essential for good adhesion and easy removal later.

  • Clean the wall with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust, grease, and dirt
  • Let it dry completely — at least 30 minutes. Moisture is the enemy of adhesion
  • Check the surface — wall stickers work best on smooth, flat surfaces. Heavily textured walls may reduce adhesion
  • Avoid freshly painted walls — wait at least 3–4 weeks after painting before applying stickers

Step 2: Plan Your Placement

Before peeling anything, hold the sticker up against the wall to visualize the final result.

  • Use a pencil to lightly mark the corners of where you want the sticker to go
  • For height measure stickers, use a level to ensure it's perfectly straight
  • For large stickers like our Avengers Wall Smash (60x90cm), have a second person help hold it in place while you check the position
  • Step back and look at the placement from across the room before committing

Step 3: Apply the Sticker

Now the fun part! Follow these steps for a bubble-free application:

  1. Start from one edge — don't peel the entire backing at once. Peel back about 5cm from one side
  2. Press and peel gradually — press the exposed adhesive onto the wall, then slowly peel the backing away while smoothing the sticker down with your other hand
  3. Smooth as you go — use your palm or a credit card to smooth the sticker from the center outward, pushing out any air bubbles
  4. Work slowly — rushing is the main cause of bubbles and misalignment
  5. For set stickers (like our Sparkling Stars or Butterfly sets), apply each piece individually rather than trying to do them all at once

Step 4: Fix Any Bubbles

Small bubbles are common and easy to fix:

  • Small bubbles — press firmly from the center of the bubble outward toward the nearest edge
  • Stubborn bubbles — use a pin to make a tiny hole, then press the air out. The hole will be invisible
  • Large bubbles — carefully lift the sticker back to the bubble, smooth it flat, and re-apply

Step 5: How to Remove Wall Stickers Without Damage

When it's time to update the room or remove the sticker, follow these steps to avoid any wall damage:

  1. Warm the sticker first — use a hairdryer on low heat for 20–30 seconds. This softens the adhesive and makes removal much easier
  2. Start from a corner — gently lift one corner with your fingernail or a flat plastic card
  3. Peel slowly at a low angle — pull the sticker back at a 45-degree angle or less, parallel to the wall rather than straight out
  4. Go slowly — the slower you peel, the less likely you are to damage the paint
  5. If residue remains — rub gently with a cloth dampened with warm soapy water or a small amount of rubbing alcohol

Tips for Specific Wall Types

Painted walls: Works best on walls painted with satin or semi-gloss paint. Matte paint is more delicate — be extra careful during removal.

Wallpaper: We don't recommend applying stickers directly to wallpaper, as removal may damage the wallpaper underneath.

Tiles: Wall stickers adhere well to smooth tiles and remove cleanly — great for bathroom or kitchen accents.

Glass: Works perfectly on glass surfaces and removes without any residue.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • āŒ Applying to a dusty or damp wall
  • āŒ Peeling the entire backing off at once for large stickers
  • āŒ Rushing the application
  • āŒ Applying to freshly painted walls
  • āŒ Pulling the sticker straight off the wall during removal (always peel at a low angle)
