One of the most common questions we get at WallStick is: "Will wall stickers damage my walls?" The short answer is no ā as long as you apply and remove them correctly. Here's our complete guide to getting a perfect result every time, without leaving any marks or residue behind.
What You'll Need
- Your WallStick wall sticker
- A clean, dry cloth
- A credit card or squeegee
- A ruler or level (optional, for precise placement)
- A hairdryer (optional, for removal)
Step 1: Prepare Your Wall
This is the most important step that most people skip. A clean, smooth surface is essential for good adhesion and easy removal later.
- Clean the wall with a slightly damp cloth to remove dust, grease, and dirt
- Let it dry completely ā at least 30 minutes. Moisture is the enemy of adhesion
- Check the surface ā wall stickers work best on smooth, flat surfaces. Heavily textured walls may reduce adhesion
- Avoid freshly painted walls ā wait at least 3ā4 weeks after painting before applying stickers
Step 2: Plan Your Placement
Before peeling anything, hold the sticker up against the wall to visualize the final result.
- Use a pencil to lightly mark the corners of where you want the sticker to go
- For height measure stickers, use a level to ensure it's perfectly straight
- For large stickers like our Avengers Wall Smash (60x90cm), have a second person help hold it in place while you check the position
- Step back and look at the placement from across the room before committing
Step 3: Apply the Sticker
Now the fun part! Follow these steps for a bubble-free application:
- Start from one edge ā don't peel the entire backing at once. Peel back about 5cm from one side
- Press and peel gradually ā press the exposed adhesive onto the wall, then slowly peel the backing away while smoothing the sticker down with your other hand
- Smooth as you go ā use your palm or a credit card to smooth the sticker from the center outward, pushing out any air bubbles
- Work slowly ā rushing is the main cause of bubbles and misalignment
- For set stickers (like our Sparkling Stars or Butterfly sets), apply each piece individually rather than trying to do them all at once
Step 4: Fix Any Bubbles
Small bubbles are common and easy to fix:
- Small bubbles ā press firmly from the center of the bubble outward toward the nearest edge
- Stubborn bubbles ā use a pin to make a tiny hole, then press the air out. The hole will be invisible
- Large bubbles ā carefully lift the sticker back to the bubble, smooth it flat, and re-apply
Step 5: How to Remove Wall Stickers Without Damage
When it's time to update the room or remove the sticker, follow these steps to avoid any wall damage:
- Warm the sticker first ā use a hairdryer on low heat for 20ā30 seconds. This softens the adhesive and makes removal much easier
- Start from a corner ā gently lift one corner with your fingernail or a flat plastic card
- Peel slowly at a low angle ā pull the sticker back at a 45-degree angle or less, parallel to the wall rather than straight out
- Go slowly ā the slower you peel, the less likely you are to damage the paint
- If residue remains ā rub gently with a cloth dampened with warm soapy water or a small amount of rubbing alcohol
Tips for Specific Wall Types
Painted walls: Works best on walls painted with satin or semi-gloss paint. Matte paint is more delicate ā be extra careful during removal.
Wallpaper: We don't recommend applying stickers directly to wallpaper, as removal may damage the wallpaper underneath.
Tiles: Wall stickers adhere well to smooth tiles and remove cleanly ā great for bathroom or kitchen accents.
Glass: Works perfectly on glass surfaces and removes without any residue.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ā Applying to a dusty or damp wall
- ā Peeling the entire backing off at once for large stickers
- ā Rushing the application
- ā Applying to freshly painted walls
- ā Pulling the sticker straight off the wall during removal (always peel at a low angle)
